We purchased two properties and decided to treat this as our ‘superannuation’, rather than put savings into to a retirement fund. This was a huge commitment and we needed someone on the ground to manage them if this was going to work. Our first few years were really difficult and our managers were not satisfactory – in fact, we seriously considered quitting the project and selling up. Fortunately for us, a local business man who we had become friends with, suggested we try Accommodation Wanaka as he personally knew one of the managers there. The rest is history and we’ve never looked back.
Our main contact over the years has been with Melanie Moore – such a genuine person, a real delight and easy to work with. She is considered in her opinion and advice, but tells it like it is. Always good with the tenants, approachable, deals with any concerns they have and get things done in a timely manner. We generally visit Wanaka once a year and catch up with Melanie, the staff and our tenants.
Our regular contact is by email and phone; there are also the maintenance service inspections which are done on a programmed basis. We get a full report with photos, which is perfect. Financial statements are received fortnightly and end of year financials are provided. So, in a nutshell, thanks to Melanie and her team, managing our properties long distance isn’t a problem – we just leave it in her capable hands and know everything will be fine.
